It’s Not Selfish

Most people these days own an important piece of equipment (yes, its a car) that is essential to daily life and take care of it. In fact many of us are proud of our vehicles and spend time, money and energy on them. We make sure they are functioning at peak performance because we don’t want to have a break down and get stuck on the side of the road. We think about it, plan for it and make sure that vehicle is ready to go at all times. Yet, when it comes to us, our mind, body and soul we don’t do the same. These truly essential elements of ourselves are not properly fueled, maintained or cared for. We don’t want to spend time, money and energy on us because we are so busy and because doing so is often considered selfish. This, my friends, is complete nonsense and we have to stop thinking like that. Caring for ourselves, putting us first and maintaining wellness is not selfish! As women we often put everyone else first. Everyone! From our significant others to our children to our friends or co-workers and pets we put everything and everybody else first.

I know because I did this for most of my adult life and it did not benefit anyone. That’s right, putting everyone else first, while neglecting me, did not benefit anyone. I thought (when I had time to think) I was sacrificing myself for others. Instead, I was just sacrificing myself. Had I thought or known to take care of myself everyone would have have been better off. I would have been healthier, happier, saner and found a way to flow much, much sooner if I had known then what I know now. Everyone in my life would have benefited sooner and in all sorts of better ways if I had just taken care of me.

It is not selfish to care for yourself. It is not selfish to figure out what you need to make flow happen in your life. It is not selfish to take time to consider requests before responding. It is not selfish to say no. It is not selfish to take the time to get to know yourself and do those things which make you happy. I’m not suggesting that you run amuck and go crazy trying to change everything in your life. I am just saying that it’s time to give yourself and your mind, body and soul some thought and take steps to make sure that you are functioning at peak performance and will continue to do so. It’s time to put you first and I promise that if you do and do it well, it will benefit everyone in your life.
